Our Story

Sigma Alpha is a professional agricultural sorority that is founded upon four pillars: scholarship, leadership, service, and fellowship. Our sorority was founded on January 26, 1978, by five Ohio State University students, Ann Huling Mathews, Cindie Davis, Marilyn Burns, Jennifer McMillan, and Amy Mathews who wanted an alternative to the social Greek sorority systems.

Since its founding, Sigma Alpha has become a national organization consisting of over 80 collegiate chapters, filled with both undergraduate and alumnae members.

Located at UMD, our Sigma Alpha Beta Alpha chapter was established in 2003 and continues to spread knowledge about agriculture on campus.

Our Purpose

The objective of Sigma Alpha is to promote its members in all facets of agriculture and to strengthen the bonds of friendship among them.

It is the purpose of its members to strive for achievement in scholarship, leadership and service and to promote excellence in women pursuing careers in agriculture.

Sigma Alpha promotes academic success amongst sisters by requiring a minimum 2.25 GPA to be maintained. We also provide study groups and test banks in order for our sisters to make their education a priority.

Scholarship

Sigma Alpha develops the leadership skills amongst its members by providing unique opportunities, Annual leadership seminars are provided both online and in-person and sisters are encouraged to hold officer positions in the sorority to foster their growing leadership skills.

Fellowship

Sigma Alpha is a sisterhood that strives to build bonds amongst sisters through events such as tailgates, Bachelor watch nights, socials with other professional Greek life organizations, or just spending time with one another!

Service

Sigma Alpha's national philanthropy is Agriculture in the Community, allowing sisters to give back and pay it forward while spreading the word about agriculture. Our local philanthropy includes maintaining the green wall garden on campus. Other service events we participate in include making dog toys for local shelters, donating to women's shelters, and more!
